Em đã từng tham dự conference và workshop; sắp tới sẽ tham dự symposium. Tuy nhiên em vẫn chưa tìm thấy sự khác biệt lớn giữa 3 loại trên. Sau đây là một số cảm nhận của em (những nhận định chỉ giới hạn trong các ngành khoa học kỹ thuật)
Giống nhau (chắc ai cũng biết): đều là nơi để những người làm nghiên cứu trình bày và thảo những kết quả của họ với người người khác trong ngành; cũng là nơi giao lưu tìm kiếm sự hợp tác.
Khác nhau: Conference: có lẽ là từ chung nhất và được dung phổ biến nhất
- Có phổ ngành tương đối rộng
- Thường được tổ chức bởi một publishing group (i.e. Desalination, ACS, bên CS chắc có IEEE) hoặc các thể loại hội này hội nọ như hội microbial fuel cell, hội nanomaterial....
- Thông thường presenter là sinh viên + một số planetary lectures or keynote speech của các giáo sư đầu ngành.
Workshop
- Có phổ ngành hẹp hơn conference
- Thông thường do những người nằm trong cùng một dự án nghiên cứu tập hợp lại và bàn luận với nhau những gì đã, đang và sắp làm. (mấy lần em tham dự đều thuộc dạng này)
- Presenter thông thường là các giáo sư, tiến sĩ, trưởng nhóm nghiên cứu; vẫn có planetary lectures và keynote speech
Symposium
Không rõ lắm vì chưa dự, nhưng em cảm giác nó nằm giữa conference và workshop,

| I've never heard of a congress meeting, personally, but the other ones I have. From my recollection, a symposium and a seminar are different in that a symposium is like a public seminar. There are many types of seminars, so just saying seminar is pretty vague. A type of seminar would be a Socratic seminar. Yet, a seminar is primarily an open discussion of ideas, yet different types of seminars include other aspects. A conference, like kalamazoo said, is a pretty general term. It basically means a group of people who discuss different things. A workshop is usually a meeting/learning experience. I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think I defined each of these terms to the best of my ability. | |

A conference is a specific group (ie. doctors only) invited to listen to lectures and what-not to learn about whatever the topic is on.
A symposium is a less specific group of people, and anyone can usually attend. It is something usually done for the public, with lectures and what-not. | |
