Gần đây có một số members, bạn bè hỏi mình về chuyện transfer PhD program từ trường này sang trường kia. Điều đặc biệt là toàn muốn về Californian Universities. Haha. How do you get transferred from Caltech to UCLA? Can you share the experience, especially in planning and execution?


My primary target in the last application is UCI. I believe the school is just within my reach.
But I think the lousy TOEFL speaking score killed my chance. T.T


I plan to apply for transfer to UCI after first year in UCR.
Hopefully, after 1 year, TOEFL will be waived. I will retake the TOEFL if needed. I will/must be calm and sound good next time.
I think I just get my butt over there (US) first.
I'm also taking American Accent training.

How do you inform your supervisor about the transfer? When do you start preparing? When do you submit the application?

My reply


Come to UCR first and then you can contact any Professor from any school in US in general and Cali in particular. As long as there's someone who wants to accept you, you're free to leave UCR, anytime. Otherwise, you may need to re-apply next year and in this economics condition, it's very hard. If there's someone who accepts you during normal Fall application process, he or she would accept you before you formally apply.

So come here, contacting Professor, giving talks, seminars, in person talks, interviews...I dont think now TOFEF score matters anymore.

Trong tình hình bây giờ, suy nghĩ về transfer là một điều không nên, đặc biệt là về Cali. Khi bạn đang ở một nơi, có tiền, làm việc okie thì cố gắng đợi qua khoảng thời gian này. Gần đây mình liên tục nhận được emails của Uni of Cali system về chuyện compulsary unpaid vacation cho employees, tình hình funding rất nguy ngập. Do vậy những bạn apply về Cali nên cố gắng thêm nữa.
