At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Environmental Engineering a number of PhD stipends are available within the general study programme Biotechnology, Chemistry and Environmental Engineering. The stipends are open for appointment from September 1, 2011. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ][Only registered and activated users can see links. ][Only registered and activated users can see links. ] Job description The Department of Biotechnology, Chemistry, and Environmental Engineering encompasses three locations: Aalborg (Section of Chemistry, Section of Biotechnology and Section of Environmental Engineering), Esbjerg Institute of Technology (Section of Chemical Engineering) and Copenhagen (Section for Sustainable Biotechnology).
Our research in biotechnology focuses on biophysical characterization and molecular aspects of protein folding, stability and functionality, gene function and discovery, plant and microbial systems biology and transcriptomics, novel and improved enzymes, fermentation technology, nanobiotechnologies, and mixed microbial communities, all to introduce new industrial products and for application in environmental, industrial, medical and green biotechnology. Biotechnology also focuses on development and screening of enzymes and microorganisms for biotechnology, and new technologies for sustainable production of ethanol, hydrogen, butanol and other energy carriers from biomass. Chemical Engineering focuses on design of new chemical processes and products within the fields of glass chemistry, sol-gel processes, photocatalysis and solar cells, applied biotechnology, bioenergy, functional materials and drug delivery. The programme furthermore comprises development of chemical processes e.g. separation processes, as well as, analytical chemistry, representative sampling in science, technology and industry as well as PAT (Process Analytical Technologies). Environmental Engineering comprises physical, chemical and (micro-) biological processes in water, drinking water, wastewater and waste treatment in cities as well as industry, including cleaner production technology. In addition, processes in soils and sediments, especially in connection with remediation of polluted soils and changes of climate, e.g. from greenhouse gases, are covered.
The application should contain a short (maximum 1 page) proposal for a PhD-project together with a mandatory statement from a potential supervisor (Associate Professor or Professor level) from the department declaring his/hers willingness to support and supervise the project.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Masters degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Engineering and Science, in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 18 of January 14, 2008 on the PhD Programme at the Universities. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.
The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
