PHAN Vu Xuan Hung, MSc in Environmental Engineering (26, Vietnam)

Vietnamese scientist Phan Vu Xuan Hung began his career at the Hanoi University of Science in Vietnam with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Chemistry. Then, he moved to Korea where he earned a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), while working as a research assistant at the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering.

Research focus: Water and wastewater treatment - desalination and photovoltaic
During his studies in Vietnam, he won numerous awards, among them a full scholarship plus a certificate of merit for excellent students. At present, Mr Hung participates as a researcher in the SEAHERO (Seawater Engineering & Architecture of High Efficiency Reverse Osmosis) Project at the Center for Seawater Desalination Plant at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology in Korea.

For the past five years, Mr Hung has been studying and working in water and wastewater treatment, especially desalination, which contributes to assuring a sustainable municipal and industrial water supply and helps terminate disease and deaths related to unsafe water. Desalination using so-called reverse osmosis works much like filtration: The salt water gets pressed through a membrane, which holds back larger molecules and ions - and salt. One challenge of this method is organic fouling, the accumulation of micro-organisms, plants, algae or animals on the membrane. Mr Hung has been investigating ways of dealing with the organic fouling mechanism of reverse osmosis membranes on the molecular level.

Among the reasons for Mr Hung's selection, the jury noted his scientific achievements in the development of osmosis membranes for the purification of seawater. Also contributing to the jury's decision was the fact that his scientific work is characterised by the combination of chemical-analytical and model-based approaches. In a world with increasing population pressures and demands on a limited fresh water supply, the importance of an energy-efficient method for water desalination is obvious.

Mr Hung sees the Green Talents Forum as a chance both to initiate additional collaboration with leading German research centres in membrane-based water treatment and to learn more about photovoltaic. Such solar-cell research will be the focus of his studies while pursuing his PhD.

"I'd like to seize this opportunity and broaden my understanding of how Germany manages to meet so much of its domestic demand through renewable energy sources", he says.

Mình thấy nếu bạn nào muốn học PhD ở Châu Âu thì bước đệm sang Hàn làm Ms là đúng đắn nhất.
Môi trường này tôi luyện đủ thứ:
+ thời khoá biểu từ 9AM đến 2 AM (the next day), không có khái niệm weekend
+ làm 1 lúc vài project (tận dụng sức lao động rẻ mạt)
+ body language, broken English, Chinese, Japanese & Korean
+ luyện khả năng ngủ trong hội nghị (international conference thường được tầm 5-10 báo cáo bằng English của mấy ông Mỹ, Nhật, còn lại là tiếng Hàn cả)
Nếu English tốt, có thể kiếm position ở trường luôn sau khi tốt nghiệp PhD. Lương lậu tầm 2000-3000 USD/tháng. Thấp nhưng dư dả so với mức sống ở đây.

1) Tổ chức bởi International Bureau BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research)

2) Đối tượng apply là những researcher trẻ (cả KHTN lẫn KHXH) nghiên cứu những vấn đề có dính dáng đến sustainable development như môi trường, vật liệu, năng lượng, chính sách....Những người apply chủ yếu đến từ các nước đang phát triển. Có lẽ họ muốn hướng đến đối tượng này, mời sang để quảng bá về nghiên cứu ứng dụng về environment, energy and climate change của Đức.

- Được một chuyến thăm thú các viện, trường ĐH và công ti của Đức trong 12 ngày. Với mình đó là một sự mở mang tầm mắt về nghiên cứu trong lĩnh vực climate change, renewable energy và sơ lược về hệ thống sản xuất của Volkswagen và OSRAM (thuộc Siemen)
- Gặp gỡ giao lưu với bạn bè đến từ nhiều nước (Năm nay có 20 người đến từ khoảng 10 nước), ăn xúc xích và uống bia Đức
- Trong thời gian 12 ngày mình được chọn 3 expert bất kì trong ngành ở Đức, người ta sẽ liên hệ và nếu expert đó đồng ý thì mình sẽ được đến thăm và trò chuyện . Đây là cơ hội rất tốt để các bạn MS tìm một suất PhD và các bạn PhD tìm một suất Postdoc ở các trung tâm nghiên cứu mà mình mong muốn.

Theo mình thì năm sau họ sẽ tiếp tục tổ chức (năm nay mới là lần 2 thôi). Nếu mình nhận được thông tin mình sẽ rêu rao, nhưng chắc cũng phải nửa năm nữa .
