Postdoctoral Fellow – Climate Change Ecologist Modeller – CSIRO
  • Join Australia’s premier science & technology research organisation.
  • Advance your career as a scientist.
  • Make a difference!
Conduct research that enables forecasting of the potential impacts of climate change on landscape function and ecosystem structure in arid Australia.

The Position

We are seeking a highly motivated and capable Postdoctoral Fellow to conduct research on the potential impacts of climate change on landscape function and ecosystem structure in arid Australia.

The semi-desert ecosystems of Australia experience an extremely variable climate and they receive inputs of water through very occasional and often intense rainfall events. Water then flows across these landscapes in complex ways that depend on geology, soil type and topography. The distribution of ecosystem primary production and biodiversity, and the viability and resilience of the resident biota, is strongly patterned by these flows of water, sediment and soil nutrients.

The primary role of this position is to develop and parameterise a spatially-explicit simulation model of how climate is likely to affect water and nutrient redistribution in the landscape and the consequences for ecosystem productivity, pattern and structure. The model will then be used to determine ecosystem sensitivity to forecast climate change (according to IPCC and AUSCLIM scenarios), and thereby inform land managers about the risks associated with climate change and guide the directions of future research on impacts in the arid zone.

Location
: Alice Springs, NT

Salary
: $73K – $80K plus super

Reference No
: 2010/391
To be successful in this position you’ll need:
  • A PhD qualification in the field of ecology, climate science, geomorphology, physical geography or simulation modelling conferred within the last 3 years.
  • A strong background in research on desert ecology and geomorphology that demonstrates deep understanding of complex systems.
  • The ability to conceptualise whole ecosystems and the interactions between many processes that determine ecosystem function and stability.
  • Experience in spatially explicit modelling using a recognised software environment.

1) Catalytic conversion of biomass into useful biochemicals or catalytic hydrogenation of fatty acids into alcohols. Especially with design, synthesis, characterization and testing of catalysts and catalytic reactions (e.g. measurement of reaction kinetics, characterization of catalysts, or kinetic modeling); Synthesis of microporous, mesoporous materials and/or nanomaterials and functionalization, and optimization of inorganic materials for catalytic application is an added advantage.
Application of supercritical fluid technology for the solubilization of biomass and also catalytic conversion. Experience in biomass conversion technologies; analytical chemistry (GC-MS, HPLC, NMR, IR); or synthesis.
2) Production of biobutanol and other biochemicals from algal biomass using bioconversion such as metabolic engineering, microbial cell genetics; blocking of Clostridium acetone pathway to enhance the production of biobutanol.
3) Dehydration of water from alcohol fermentation broth by using inorganic membrane or organic membrane.
E2FTC of Myongji University is funded by University Key Research Center Program managed by National Research Foundation of Korea for next 9 years with majors in microbiology, biochemistry, biochemical engineering, catalytic reaction engineering, polymeric membranes, inorganic membranes application related with a production of biofuels and biorefinery products.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will work on fundamental understanding and development of each related topics such as catalysts and catalytic processes or biological conversion or dehydration inorganic membrane involved in conversion of biomass feedstocks into liquid fuels and value added chemicals. The selected candidate will be expected to work independently on defined research projects as well as in multidisciplinary research teams.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates should have a Ph.D. degree in Inorganic Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Microbiology or a similar quantitative discipline. Strong experimentation skills, good communication skills, and a proven publication record are essential.
