It takes a lil more time but it does help.
The fact is basically, you can contact any Professor that you like. However, the ones which currently have openings will likely to reply you positively. Then, things will be lots easier, esp. when the two's research interests match. Moreover, if you know any Professor which has openings but does not explicitly announce on his/her website, please also post here.
Thanks very much.

Available Positions: Currently there are a number of open positions in my research group.
One Postdoctoral position, one PhD position and one MSc position in the areas of Network Coding or Relay Channels (start day as soon as possible).
Strong candidates are encouraged to email a detailed resume (at least three references) and a copy of their transcripts to me. Also, please include a one-page document clearly stating how your expertise matches the indicated areas.

Since 4 PhD students are graduating this year, the Statistical Signal Processing & Stochastic Optimization Lab is looking for 3 new PhD students for 1 postdoc. Full Research Assistantship support is available. Research Areas: Biomedical signal processing, Sensor and actuator Networks; Bayesian inference, computational game theory, stochastic optimization click here for details.
Note that given the huge number of enquiries for graduate student positions in my research group, I can only accept a small proportion of applicants who have very strong academic credentials. However, as a policy, I offer Research Assistantships to all accepted applicants. Major scholarship holders are welcome to apply and are routinely accepted (as you can see from the list of students; 4 of my current students have full external scholarships from NSERC or UBC). NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship recipients are welcome to inquire about top-ups. Note that it is now possible for outstanding applicants who have completed an acceptable bachelors program to be admitted directly into the PhD program.

Thank you for your interest in working with me. I am looking for new graduate students (both MSc thesis option and PhD) to join my group. In particular, I'm looking for PhD applicants who have experience in computer vision or machine learning, but interest and enthusiasm for computer vision is most important. SFU accepts applications for both Fall and Spring starting dates, and I will be accepting new students for Fall 2009 and Spring 2010.
If you are a new/prospective student, and you are interested in working with me on a research project please read the following. Note that this information is for those students who are not already enrolled in the SFU CS department as a graduate student. If you are at SFU, please send me an email stating your research interests, and we'll set up a meeting.
If you are a prospective graduate student and you have some prior background in computer vision (papers, projects, courses etc.) then please feel free to send me an email about yourself and your research interests. Please see my homepage and the Vision and Media Lab for a list of my recent research projects to get an idea of what I'm interested in.
I like to maintain a moderate sized group of students (approx. 5), with whom I work closely, meeting at least weekly to discuss research. As my student we would work together on interesting projects, publish papers in top conferences (e.g. CVPR/ICCV), you would travel to them to present our work, and receive RA funding while doing all of this. Basically, it's being free to work on projects you find exciting and getting paid to do so -- life as a grad student is pretty nice!
A rule of thumb about what I expect in terms of thesis content -- an MSc thesis is one conference paper, and the student should strive to make this into a journal paper as well. A PhD thesis is at least three conference papers, in addition to related workshop and journal papers. MSc students should expect to complete their degrees in 1.5-2 years, PhD students in 3-4 years. For those who are familiar with the US system, direct entry into the PhD program from BSc is atypical in Canada -- a MSc is required. Students with a BSc would apply to the MSc program, and are encouraged to continue their work towards a PhD upon completion of the MSc. Note that our MSc students typically receive full RA/TA funding, unlike many programs in the US.
Information on funding is available from the SFU CS Graduate Program. Typical funding levels in our group are $19500/year for M.Sc. students and $22000/year for Ph.D. students. We will match competing offers from other schools, please email for more information. In addition, my lab currently has industry collaboration including internships. These internships include a $12000 stipend for one semester.
