The Department of Resource Economics at the University of Nevada, Reno, has received additional funding to offer three research assistantships to new Graduate Students starting in fall 2009. The assistantships include a stipend of $18,000 per year, a partial tuition waiver, and health insurance coverage. Conditional on strong performance and in absence of any unforeseen shortfall in funding, the full assistantship will be available for up to five years. While we give preference to PhD students, well-qualified MS students are also encouraged to apply for this funding opportunity.
Our graduate program provides a strong foundation in microeconomic theory and quantitative methods, with focus on Resource and Environmental Economics, Regional Economics, and Applied Econometrics.
Details for both the PhD and MS program are available on the web at:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
These assistantships provide a superb opportunity for students to work with faculty on funded research. The majority of Research Assistantships result in co-authored publications and often lay the foundation for dissertation and/or Master’s theses.
To assure adequate time for administrative processing we encourage students to apply for this opportunity no later than June 30, 2009. Successful applicants are expected to join the program by August 17, 2009.

FP7 Marie-Curie Initial Training Network
Risk Management and Risk Reporting
Position: Early Stage Researcher/PhD Placement
Project Title: Realized Covariance
Project Description: This project will study estimation and modeling of financial volatilities based on high frequency data, named realized volatilities, which are more accurate measures than their low frequency counterparts. The research objectives are both technique and content driven. The research will focus on developing precise measures of highly dimensional covariance matrices in the presence of market microstructure noise and Epps effects (non-synchronicity and non-equidistance of price observations), as well as on extending and improving the structure of the existing dynamic covariance models in order to account for specific statistical properties, such as long memory and constructing parsimonious parametrical models to capture major stylized facts of price volatility. Further, in the empirical application of the project, it will be shown that realized covariance approaches are strong competitors to standard multivariate GARCH approaches as instruments for portfolio and risk management. For this purposes, new economic and statistical criteria have be developed.
Proposed Start Date: September 2009 subject to finalization of the contract
Duration: 36 months
Financial Information: Salary plus allowances in line with Marie-Curie FP7 requirements for ESRs.

Study Program
It is the aim of the study program to provide the students with a broad and deeply rooted methodological and conceptual basis in order to enable them to approach problems of economics and, more generally, social sciences via mathematical models and quantitative empirical tools. The course program is designed in such a way as to enable the students to simultaneously achieve a broad methodological platform and focus on a specific field of specialization. The program has three phases:
In the first one an adaption of students with their various backgrounds to a common level of understanding of basic economic theory and quantitative methods, and to expertness in the use of specific mathematical methods.
For each incoming student a committee of EBIM faculty members determines the areas where additional background is needed. Based on this evaluation students have to take a selection of core courses from the areas:
Microeconomics
Macroeconomics
Statistics and Econometrics
The second phase is a period of parallel specialization and broadening the area of competence. It also contains the beginning of own research directed to the doctorate.
The third phase is devoted to writing the doctoral dissertation that is accompanied by attending research seminars, organizing small workshops, and reporting about the own project to researchers and peers.
For details about the study program see: Curriculum for EBIM
